I don't remember what I was going to write about tonight...it doesn't matter really...something happened that made me change my mind. I came home tonight expecting a package, but received something infinitely better. It may sound silly, because the envelope I received is not about me, but it is. Make sense? Yeah, me either.
Today, I received paperwork to provide an adoption reference for a woman (and her husband) who I've known practically longer than anyone. Well, anyone I'm not related to. I knew it was coming, I just didn't know how good I'd feel when it did. Here's the thing, I turned 40 this year and I got everything I ever wanted. And this is one more example of what a wonderful and fortunate life I have. Ok, seriously, I don't want to make their adoption process about me, but this is my blog after all.
What do I mean when I say that receiving this paperwork is an example of my fortune? Well, it's simple really. I made a commitment 8 years ago to do the ongoing work of becoming the person I want to be. When I started this journey, I didn't know what that looked like. All I could think of was that I wanted to be like D. She has always been there for me, someone I could count on. I wanted to be like that. I didn't really know how to do it though and knew that it wouldn't happen overnight. Some days, I wondered if it would ever happen. Some days, I thought that none of my friends would like me if they knew the crazy shit that ran through my head at times.
Somewhere along the way, I began to figure out who I wanted to be. I wanted to be the kind of person you'd call and ask to babysit your kids. Don't get me wrong, I don't actually want to babysit your kids, I just want to be a person who you ask. Soooooo, you see, getting this paperwork today confirms that the work I've done has all kept me moving in the right direction. I'm becoming the person that I want to be and I'm fortunate that others have noticed and value it too. Tonight, I'm full of gratitude that everything I've ever wanted is coming my way. I'm even more grateful that none of it is anything that money can buy.
